An Ordinary Woman

The gentlemen and especially the ladies who started to arrive in Opatija in the second half of the 19th century were shocked by the habits of the local people, particularly the habit the local men had of bathing in the sea completely naked.

As a result, a provision was passed prescribing a dress code for the beach. Men had to wear briefs, while women also had to wear a top. However, rules are there to be broken, so the men continued to swim naked and free.

One of them was the husband of our Ordinary Woman, who has been punished for his defiance. As the punishment was rather severe, he didn't return home last night because of his embarrassment and hurt pride. At home, he has plenty of work to do, from farming to taking care of the animals, if he wants to pay his fine from their modest income.
